Tuina Massage
What is Tuina?
Tuina (pronounced "twee-nah") is a traditional Chinese massage therapy that blends physical bodywork with an understanding of the body's natural energy, known as Qi. Using a variety of manual techniques, the practitioner works with your body's soft tissues, along energy channels, and at specific points to encourage deep relaxation and restore a sense of balance.
With roots stretching back thousands of years, Tuina is one of the oldest forms of bodywork still practised today. Its name, meaning "push and grasp," became widely used during the Ming dynasty, when Chinese medicine became further systematised and massage techniques were studied and documented in depth.
Tuina is traditionally viewed as the predecessor to acupuncture — hands came before needles, and the needle became an extension of the hand. Today, it is practised worldwide and has influenced many modern bodywork therapies.
What does Tuina feel like?
Tuina treatment is typically soothing, warming, and rhythmic. Your practitioner will tailor the session to suit your needs — techniques can be gentle and deeply nourishing, or more invigorating, depending on what feels right for you.
Treatment is usually given through loose clothing with a soft cloth, though occasionally a herbal preparation may be applied directly to the skin. Many people choose to have Tuina on its own, while others combine it with acupuncture for a more integrated approach.
